My JD4100 has 200 hrs on it. Just this week, when temps dropped below 20 degrees, the hydraulic systems seems to be freezing or loosing its strength. Seems to "pulse" instead of lift (as does the steering). Since this is a JD4100, the hydraulic/trans/power steering all use the same JD low viscosity hygrd oil. Fluid level is fine. Also, to my inexperienced eye, the oil looks good on the dipstick (not milky, etc.). It has been cold before and never did this. Also, for about 10 minutes this morning it worked fine but then started to act up. Dealer thinks it is just cold and sugg replacing fluid and filter.
What could be causing this ? What next ?

My only experience with hydraulics behaving similar to yours is water in the hydraulic oil; changing the oil was required.

George, I'm sure water is your culprit. Most modern trans/ hydraulic fluids have the ability to hold small amounts of water in suspension, but after that limit is reached you then have free water in the system. This water freezes over intake screens, filter media, etc., starving your pump. Changing the fluid and filters is most likely your solution, but do it during a warm spell or after the tractor has been in a heated shed for a couple days so that any free water in the systerm has thawed and will drain out with the old fluid. Changing the oil sure wouldn't hurt. Look for a weak relief valve or a misadjusted setting. It will allow a pulse. Do you have a slight squeal too? ....

Thanks for the input so far. Seems water in the line might be my problem. BTW - no squeal or sqeaks at all. ....
